PrevAIDS.org - Venereal, genital or skin diseases and HIV.

Any abnormality or lesion in the genital area should be considered as a risk factor for being infected yourself by HIV and/or a risk factor to infect your partner. You should never have sexual intercourse if you or your partner have a genital disease (venereal or not). You should also be aware that some diseases (herpes, etc.) of the genital area are never totally cured; relapses will come often during the rest of your life.

If it is impossible to avoid sexual desire, it is highly suggested that you use condoms for all kinds of sexual relations including relations without vaginal or anal insertion.

What are the main venereal and/or non venereal diseases affecting the genital area?

  • Gonorrhea (often, heavy discharges and pain... sometimes just itching...)

  • Chlamydia (often, mild discharges... sometimes only redness of the head of penis...)

  • Syphilis (often, painless wound... inguinal lymph nodes are common and general symmetrical rash can occur later on...)

  • Condyloma (often painless nodules...)

  • Herpes (usually blisters come first and painful wounds later on...)

  • Tinea (often itching; productive (wet) wounds... but sometimes dry and/or progressing into a dry eczema...)

  • Pediculosis (often itching and wounds due to scratching ... insects are often visible without magnification in pubic hairs...)

  • Scabies (often acute itching; eczema and little linear wounds due to both scabies and scratching...)

  • Trichomoniasis (often itching and mild vaginal discharges...redness is common...)

  • Etc… the list is not exhaustive.

Nearly each disease can have quite similar symptoms and the correct diagnosis can only be made by a doctor and through a general medical check including sometimes a blood test.

You must know also that:

  • Sometimes lesions can be seen but sometimes lesions can not be seen as they are localized inside the vaginal cavity or hidden in the pubic hairs...

  • Sometimes the lesions never recover without treatment ...but sometimes lesions seem to disappear by themselves: in fact, the disease enters into your body and will produce neurological symptoms or skin diseases many years later...

  • Sometimes taking the wrong medications make you feel better quickly but will induce worse complications or severe relapses later on…

  • Etc.

You should never try to do the diagnosis and treatment of a genital disease (venereal or not) by yourself. The subject is difficult and a wrong treatment can induce "catastrophic" consequences. If you want to understand the complexity of the subject click here... you will directly see why a disease in the genital area (venereal or not) should be treated by a medical specialist.
